Here's the deal... everyone wants to be happy. Today we contend that the happiness of the Scripture is markedly different than the way most of us define it. Most of us are "happy" when things are going well (it has much to do with our circumstances). The happiness that Scripture defines is unconditional... it happens because of who we know... not because of how we feel.

Preaching Jesus is not just about what pastors teach from the stage... though it starts there. The wholeness of this concept includes the way that we live our lives. Do we just believe in Jesus or do our choices reflect that we are His followers?

This week we looked at Philippians 1:20-30 and learned that part of being happy is being different. As followers of Jesus the way we handle life ought to look different than the way others do... but what does that look like? This is where we'll spend our time.

For those of us who believe (in the short term) there is a higher standard that we are being held to (and eventually all will be evaluated according to this Gold Standard). We are not simply looking for our best life now. We are to be following and imitating the One who was perfect... Jesus. This means pursuing the things He was. It starts with attitude and the way I choose to treat others.

As we are finding over and over the Scriptures tell us not only to do something but how to do it. This week is no exception. As Paul discusses with us how happy hearts shine the light of Jesus. Listen in as Dion leads us through Philippians 2:12-30.

Does believing in God's sovereignty negate man's responsibility? This is a question that has been asked for centuries. The text of Philippians 3:1-14 seems to suggest some bad accounting... but some good theology. The equation works something like this: 100% God and us doing 100% of what we can do to be more like Jesus.

So here it is... last week we learned that God is sovereign over the affairs of man... and He gives us responsibility to continue to become more like Jesus in that process. Today we see what it takes to stay on that path. Immediately obvious is that to be on the journey you have to start taking a walk. But what about after that? What kinds of things help us to remain faithful? What does that look like? And how does this lead to our happiness?

One of things we love talking about at Process Church is that if the gospel matters, it has to matter in context. This week's Scripture from Philippians 4:1-5 illustrate just how true that reality is. The power of the gospel extends to and transforms our relationships with one another... particularly those of us who follow Jesus. We cannot claim to follow Jesus and live at odds with others.

Think about how much recycling you did 10 years ago. How about 15? The reality for most of us is that recycling has slowly become a way of life as we have been taught about global footprints and seen the positive impact of reuse. The way God means to change the way our thinking works happens in many similar terms. Slowly we begin to understand the importance of focusing our thoughts in the right places and on the right things.
